In case you’re wondering, our 6 week challenge is going pretty well. Still logging workouts and meals. Still losing lbs..slowly..which is fine. Had a few dietary ‘set backs’ during a weekend visit to my husband’s parents home. How could I possibly turn down authentic Indian food? When we returned, I got right back on track with my yummy green juices.
As you all know my husband and I are avid world travelers. We were watching a Bourdain episode the other night and decided that our next destination in May 2013 will be Croatia. So here’s where I need your help! We are clueless about Crotia and with my practice being so busy right now, and my husband’s work as well, there is little room for research or planning.
We know based on the Bourdain episode that we definitely want some R and R time on the beach. We would like a ‘best of’ trip that we could do in 7 days. We are adventurous in most ways and able to manage effectively getting around via public transportation or car rentals..whatever is needed. We’d also like advice on the best site to get a reasonably priced ticket from the US to Croatia. Upon my brief research, the tickets for May 2013 are + or – $1000, which seems a little pricey to me. Is this typical? Any thoughts that any of you have on visiting Croatia is invited! Please Help!!
Hi. I live in Croatia (near Zagreb) so I’ll give you an insiders look i hope.
First off, may is good if you want to miss crowds but it’s just a start of tourist season so not all restaurants and etc. will be open but bigger issue is the sea (it will not be warm enough for swimming if you are anything like me and love to swim).
Places to recommend would be:
Zagreb (capital), Varaždin, Osijek and Plitvice lakes if you’ll be visiting coastal region of Croatia (which I would definitely recommend for overall feel of the country – because everybody go straight to the coast and miss the diversity of the country)
Zadar, Dubrovnik, Split, Šibenik, Rovinj and islands like Hvar, Korčula, Vis, Pag for coastal region.
Since you have only one week maybe it would be the best to stay in the middle (like Zadar) and then if you want you can check other places on daily trips (not too far if you have a car which I think it’s a must). If you want to stay just in one place and relax go for one of the islands (not much to see but more relaxed).
Regarding places to eat, don’t be shy and ask locals where the best food is. Trust me when I say – the worst the place looks like, probably the better food it is
For sleeping arrangement, cheaper and often better is to go on private apartments (but there are big differences in offer so be sure to check before you rent). You can check http://www.apartmanija.hr and for overall informations http://www.likecroatia.hr/
Hope I was helpful.
Thank you for commenting. Nothing beats trip advice from a local! I like your suggestion about staying in the middle and taking side trips from there. I will look up the places you mentioned. I love your remark “the worst the place looks like, probably the better food it is”. Ive found that this has been the case with many of our travels
Thanks again for your insight! Very helpful!
